High Quality Full Frame Super Wide Angle ZoomStrengths: Sharp photos. Very high quality construction. There is nothing else in this focal legnth in a full frame format to compare this to. Weakness: Some light fall off at edges, to be expected with this wide an angle lens. Cannot use polarizer at widest angles, can use 82mm at about 17mm and longer. This is a well built, sharp lens. I bought it to use with a Canon 5D, and there are some issues with the edges being slightly darker and less sharp, but to build a lens that could correct that at this focal legnth would cost several times as much as this was. My other wide angle is a Canon 24-105L IS, this is not quite as sharp, but it is so much wider angle, it does not seem fair to compare the...

Sigma 12-24mm for Canon 5DStrengths: Hardly any distortion (handles distortion better than 17-40 and 24-105), great price, very good sharpness even wide open, solidly built, fast to focus, only zoom lens of this type for a full frame. Weakness: Unable to attach a protective filter lens. This is an excellent lens even at f4.5, but you must be prepared to take your time to find a good copy. I had to go through 2 copies before I found this last one. I will never sell my lens. The 1st one could not auto focus, the 2nd was not balanced ie softness was heavy on the right side. ADVICE: Take your time to buy one from a good reseller who will take returns/exchanges at no extra cost.

Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX HSM DG for Canon lens
Strengths: Solid Build, HSM is fast and quiet, very little distortion at 12mm, zero distortion at 24mm, extremely reasonably priced.
Weakness: Wish the F stop was a little lower ie f3.5, slight light fall off but that's the nature of a super wide lens. You have to learn how to use it. Can't really attach filters.
I'm extremely happy with this lens. Canon doesn't make a super wide zoom in this range. it is extremely sharp, I've tested it against my Canon calibrated Canon 17-40 and 24-105, and this lens is as good as these 'L' lenses. In fact, I'm going to sell my Canon 17-40 as the distortion at 17mm is significant when compared to the Sigma 12-24. Distortion on the 24-105 at 24mm even worse compared to...
